For architecture buffs a stop at the Monastery of Jeronimos is a must do. This beautiful structure was declared a National Monument in 1907. It later went on to be named a piece of World Heritage in the early 1980's. It is constructed with both renaissance and gothic architecture details making it visually interesting and beautiful.
Additionally, those who are interested in buildings absolutely must see the Tower of Belam. It was built in honor of Saint Vincent. When it was finished in the early 1500's it stood as a display of the prestige and wealth of the king. However, through the years it has come to be the symbol of Portugal as a whole, and in the 1980's it too was declared a piece of World Heritage.
To really get a feel for the city itself you will want to spend some time in the square known as The Praca do Comercio. It is here that much of the trading and business of the city takes place. At the center of the square stands a monument dedicated to the rebuilding effort that took place after the devastating earthquake of 1755. While in the square you must stop to have a bite to eat at one of the delicious cafes.
